Why "Three Junction"?
I'm very interested in the junction of people, data and technology; understanding how people use it and how it effects them.
I've been working in that space my entire career. My most recent experience is in applying those principles to the ecommerce world. Ultimately, I am intrigued by any place where people, data and technology are joined meaningful ways. Technology can be inadvertently used to diminish us as human beings. What are the ways that we leverage it to speak to our humanity and not simply treat us as a number or email address? So, Three Junction Consulting was born out of a desire to dive into these sorts of questions in a way that will help businesses and organizations move forward with intentionality and purpose.
Biography
Laying the Foundation
I started my career as a code geek. I really enjoyed twiddling with the bits and bytes to make them do what I want. I found it satisfying when I discovered a creative way to solve a technical riddle and then saw it all work. When I landed at the second start-up company that I've worked for, I discovered an environment where I was free to solve problems using whatever means I saw fit. This was the soil that allowed the seed of creative thinking to grow. While I was coding and solving technical problems, I was learning what it meant to try new things and take risks.
In that same job, I first got my hands on some real data dilemmas. The company integrated directory assistance data from all of the major telephone companies in the US. I learned a lot about poor data quality and what it takes to massage data into a workable format. I also had my first exposure to the notion of thinking about how data is used. If you know anything about how the old system of calling directory assistance used to work, you know that saving an operator even one second translated to millions of dollars saved per year. If the data isn't right, the operator can't use it efficiently. People, data, technology...
Technology and Beyond
Somewhere in my 30s, I realized that I enjoyed trying new things and figuring them out as I worked through them. Not just technical puzzles, but just about anything.
- I had never managed a team of developers before. Let me see what that's all about.
- I co-founded a company that needed someone to figure out how to on board and support clients. I figured that out.
Along the way, I've discovered that the technical foundation that I set early in my career has given me unique insights into how data and technology are used together to accomplish business goals. There are a lot of ways to cobble together some data and wrap it in technology. I’ve recognized that there are only a few ways to do it right.
In my efforts to build a client success team, I've experienced the human element in the marrying of software and data. Ultimately, someone has to use the product of that marriage. Is it set up in a way that they can do so? I have a penchant for figuring that out.
My earlier data experience was specific and limited to the world of telephony data. More recently, I've gained a lot of knowledge about how data can be leveraged to improve customer retention for ecommerce businesses. I would never have guessed how difficult it is to get all of the right information about customers in one database and make that data useful. I've spoken to many businesses that have tried and failed to do so. That's when I realized that I have a very fortunate background that allows me the insights necessary to marry technology and data in a way that it can be used to affect people. Furthermore, I noticed that a lot of the same principles that apply to ecommerce data also apply in many other industries.
